During the ground war, the intelligence section was the
focal point for captured enemy weapons, equipment and documents.
Among the captured items were a BRDM, APC equipped with SA-9
missile system, two 2SI SP howitzers, and an MTLB APC. Further-
more, several caches of Jordanian ammunition were found and
reported to higher headquarters. We captured 32 prisoners during
the operation: three officers, and 29 enlisted. The attached
radio battalion team was instrumental in our interrogation of an
enemy captain. The EPWA were turned over to CSSD-17 within 48
hours.
LOGISTICS/MAINTENANCE
Personnel assigned to key staff billets this period have
been a source of strength for the logistical support of the
battalion. The arrival of personnel in the following key staff
billets have greatly enhanced the battalion's logistics and
maintenance posture: Battalion Ordnance Officer (Capt),
Ammunition Technician (SSgt), the Artillery Maintenance Chief
(GySgt) and the battalion (GySgt) and Headquarters Battery (SSgt)
Truckmaster.
Battalion supply has continued to perform well throughout
this period. Prior to the battalion deploying to Operation
Desert Shield, the Supply section, through selective interchange
of gear throughout III MEF, was able to save approximately
0129,000.00 of 3d Marine Division funds. Upon deploying to SWA,
the battalion had no T/E deficiencies. Prior to and during
combat operations, supply continued to receive a continuous flow
of both consumable and m&Jor end items that enabled the battalion
to successfully complete all assigned missions.
The battalion's UDP batteries have been currently assigned
/10). The continuity in
personnel has enhanced the maintenance posture for all types of
equipment.
The Battalion Motor Transport section has performed with
excellent results. Prior to deploying to SWA all motor transport
assets were at 100% readiness. The battalion's refueler and
operator (Cpl Dempsey) performed exceptionally prior to and
during combat operations. During this period, over 27,000
gallons of fuel were dispensed. This effort identified T/E
deficiency, a single M49 refueler hag the capacity for only .3
DOS of fuel. This is not acceptable in a high intensity, fast
moving operation such as Desert Storm.
During this period the Embarkation section supervised the
deployment of the entire battalion to SWA. Embarkation was
accomplished via MAC, commercial air for cargo and personnel,
and MPS (Cape Edmont) for rolling stock.
The Ordnance section during Desert Storm and Desert Shield
was responsible for ORFing two (2) M198 howitzers, four (4) ODUS,
