Qayarrah Depot
Filename:085pgv.91d
Subject: Qayarrah Depot
1810\20 FEB 91 SENT BY
[ (b)(1) sec 1.3(a)(4) ]
Activity was noted on 8 February at CW bunkers at H-3
Airfield and Qayarrah West Ammo Depot. It was assessed that the
activity involved the burial of munitions in revetted areas in
order to protect the weapons from bombing attacks. chemical
weapons were possibly involved in this burial activity..
[ (b)(1) sec 1.3(a)(4) ] assesses that this activity
may have indicated a movement of chemical ammunition to the front
line, and not dispersal for defensive purposes.
RESPONSE: It is possible that chemical munitions have
been removed from the bunkers at Qayarrah West Ammo Depot and H-3
bunkers and moved to the front lines. However, at Qayarrah West,
there was definitely a pattern of movement of material from the
bunkers (not just the CW related bunkers) to nearby fields for
burial. Whether there were chemical munitions in the 5-shaped
CW-related bunkers, whether these munitions were in fact moved
with
conventional munitions into the surrounding fields, or whether
these possible chemical munitions were separately moved to the
front is not presently assessable. There can be no definitive
assessment of the disposition of the ammunition in these bunkers
with the limited information available.
