Subject: Fear in Saudi Arabia of Chemicals Weapons Attack

There was growing fear in Riyadh in mid-February 1991 over the 
possible use of chemical weapons by Iraqi forces. Some elements 
believed that it was practically certain that Iraq would use 
chemical weapons on the battlefront where coalition forces were 
prepared.  Coalition forces had detected systems placed near the 
border with Saudi Arabia to create toxic clouds. At least one 
element believed that some of the SCUDs intercepted over Riyadh 
might have been armed with binary weapons.
