UNIT: A Troop, 4/7th Cavalry
ACTIVITY/EVENT: Contact with Iraqi Tanks
DATE/TIME OF ACTIVITY/EVENT: 26 February 1991
DESCRIPTION OF ACTIvITY/EVENT:
On the 26th of February at approximately 1400 hours, A Troop,
4/7th Cavalry was at the south end of Objective Collins. They were
in the vicinity of phase line Berlin when they were told that 3d
Armored Division would turn to the east and conduct movement to
contact with the Republican Guard (Division believed this to be the
Tavial@@ana division). A Troop had been the flank screen for the
Division. They had placed the air troops forward and the ground
troops flanking (in the shape of a huge L). A Troop Was the lead
ground troop. They established a contact point that was supposed
to be 5010, to link up with scout platoon of 4/34 Armor,
preslimeably also 2d ACR. About a kilometer short of that
location, A Troop came upon the TOC a+ 2d Squadron 2d ACR and
discovered that there was some enemy contact along the front of 2d
ACR. 2d Squadron stated that if A Troop, 4/7th Cavalry turned to
the right, approximately 5-6 kilometers away they would find
contact. It was further believed that the Iraqi's had a screen
line along the 64 grid line. At this time, 4@d Squadron was the
gio%t northern element of 2d ACR.
-@ci ACR believed they would be linking up with Ist ODE, 4/"4
Armor, @@nown as the CentLtrians. 2d ACR also stated that the
CC)nLact so 4ar was some EiRDMs and BMPs and a couple of T-55s (in
SC.ICII 'lumbers, ore ierL- and 3ne there). rho-,, @)elteved the IrRciii
tc) ne moving northeast to reposition or withdraw.
that time the 4/7th CavRlry Squadron Commander,
linked up with scout platoon and initiated Some quick
coordination about contact points all the way to the east and
exchanged freqs With A Troop. This caused a good tie-in to the
left and the right of the movement. A Troop, 4/7th CI%V d
tc) make a right (easterly) turn. A Troop's commmander,
thought the'Zone they covered would be 3 kilometers wide, between
the main -ar, d 2d ACR. Therefore, he directed his 2nd and 3rd
platoons uct a zone reconnaissance betweeen the two bodies.
He +urth3-*mtt?rducted Ist platoon to continue the flank screen to
tie-in wit4 2d ACR (they were not from so they were put
on the right hand side of the movement heading east).
