                                        XVIII ABN CORPS - DESERT SHIELD
                                         TIPS FOR FIGHTING AND WINNING IN A CHEMICAL
                                                               ENVIRONMENT


                                        THREAT
                                        •  Iraq has a substantial OW capability. They used it on Iran/own
                                           people.
                                        •  Primary agents: Blister ( Sulfur Mustard) and nerve (G- Series).
                                        •  Delivery Moans: Mortars, Arty, Rockets, Acft, Helios.
                                        •  Take immediate action, upon receipt of threat warnings.
                                        •  Assume all Iraqi fixed / rotary Wing actt spray chemicals. Mask, seek
                                           overhead cover and sound alarm. 11 spray is detected, assume
                                           MOPP 4.,
                                        •  High airbursts and low explosive detonations signal chemical
                                           attacks.

                                        MASK: PRIMARY MEANS OF PROTECTION.
                                        •  Pull PMCS frequently. Check for sand around inlevoutiet valves.
                                        •  Chock drinking system and practice drinking w,.Ih mask on.
                                        •  Practice donning mask in 9 seconds, with hood and straps in 15
                                           seconds.
                                        •  Keep your 3 NAAKS, Water Proof Bag and MS Paper in inner pocket
                                           of carrier.
                                        •  Ensure log strap is not secured around carrier. M258AI in outer

                                        •  Canteen cap must have prot flap or substitutro (100 MPH TAPE).
                                        •  Treat your mask as though your life deponded on it - IT DOES I

                                        •  Flexible system keyed to METT-T, workload, and threat.
                                        •  Patch all holes in storage bag to maintain CPOGIBDO service life.
                                        •  Use buddy system when donningidoffing. Prelace footwear covers.
                                        •  Decon mask, hood with M 2581 when doffing.
                                        •  Wear over undorware only to lessen heat stress.
                                        •  Leave trousers/jacket open/unzipped as long as possible.
                                        •  Attach M 9 Paper to opposing trouser log4acket sleeve/wrist.
                                        •  Once you assume MOPP 4, drink water ASAP and continuously.
                                        •  Minimize time in MOPP 4. Look immediately for clean areas.
                                        •  Get out of contaminated area as soon as mission pormfts.
                                        •  Plan for water resupply in advance.
