NOTES ON MOVING THROUGH OIL FIELDS

BURNING OIL IS NOT A THREAT EXCEPT FOR THE HEAT.

The powder residue left after oil is burned (from the
Hydrogen Sulfide) is not dangerous, it is only ash.
   2
                  - Get upwind from oil spills. Do not get downwind of oil
leaking from a pipeline, it contains Hydrogen Sulfide and will
kill you. Light it.off immediately - FROM A GOOD DISTANCE AWAY.
Any spark should do it, a tracer should have no problem.

Cross pipelines at an angle perpendicular to the wind
that way, if there is a break in the line, you will be above i@
once you have crossed, and those men behind you will not be
downwind of it as they are waiting to cross.

                  - If oil is flowin from a pipeline, look for a cutoff valve
on the "upstream" side. The valve can be automatic, hydraulic ,
or manual. CAREFULI The valves could be boobytrapped.

                  - Normally, just let a pipeline burn. If You ve-got to stop
one, however, you can try knocking the well head (the 'Christmas
Tree') off of it. If'you can't do it with something like an AT-
4, try pulling it down, with a LONG line connected to a truck.
There is often a *failsafe" shutoff valve about 200 feet or so
below the surface that will shut it down. The remaining oil
should 'burn off in about.1 - 4 hours. If there is no valve,
however, you will likely have an explosion and a stronger fire
             afterwards.
You should be able to rupture (or at least crack) a'
pipeline by'runnin4 into it with a large vehicle, particularly if
'you hit it.at a seam. This could be dangerous, however if the
oil should spark off a fire. HMMVWs may have a little problem
             ,;7ith this, tanks should not.

                  - Oil (large pools or small) that has been sitting out in
the sun for a long time (say 4 months or so), is no problem
because the Hydrogen Sulfide has evaporated away. It may even be
hard to light, because it will have basically turned into asphoclt
(which you might be able to take advantage of for mobility).

                  - The pipelines are fairly strong. A good layer of earth on
top of a pipeline (1-2 feet) should let you travel over it safely
             without breaking it.

The GOSP (Gas Oil Separation.,Piant) is to'be avoided. It
is the group-of buildings where the oil is initially processed,
It -has large amounts-of gas, oil, etc. in it. If it is still
standing, it could very well be boobytrapped.

NOTE: 'This information wao'kindly provided by Mr Henry Cook.
