Annual Historical Review - Third Battalion, 502nd Infantry
On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded its tiny neighbor Kuwait and threatened to
invade its large.- neighbor, oil rich Saudi Arabia. The United states i=ediately
deployed soldiers to Saudi Arabia in order to deter an invasion. From August 22
to August 30, 1990, Task Force 3-502 traveled the many miles to the Pershing Gulf.
Upon arrival at Kirg Fahd International Airport, the task force established a base
camp named "Camp Eagle II,', north of the port city of Dhahran.
From September, 1990 to December, 1990, Task Force 3-502 conducted numerous
defensive missions and trained intensively near the Kuwait border at Forward
Operations Base Bastognenear An Nuariyaand Logistics Operations Base Oasis@
iear Quaryat al Ulya. The battalion also executed guard and refit missions at
Camp Eagle II.
January was originally planned as a nonth of continued training and defensive
operations. A boundary change with MARCENT delayed this plan, and created a lack
of clarity for all upcoming missions. Thus, tie first week of January was a much
needed time of respite for the soldiers at Camp Eagle II. For the first time in
rr,ary weeks, the soldiers had the opportunity to relax at the recreational facili-
ties in Dhahran.
On January 8, the battalion discovered that Camp Eagle 11 could and probably
would be closed. Tl,.e same day, Task Force 3-502 also received instructions that
it had been attached to the-First Cavalry Division, and that the battalion was
to move to an area in northern Saudi Arabia near Qaystmeh. On the ninth, the bat-
tali-on packed everything that it could; what could not be carried was left behind.
The s@,af@ briefed the movement order at 5:30 AM on the tenth. Company D went
to Task Force 1-502 during the move, and Company B went to the 9-101 Aviation Bat-
talion as a security element until January 27th. What personnel who did not travel
by convoy on tl,.e tenth flew by C-130 military transport from King Fahd International
Airport to King Khalid Military C4-@.y.
Task Force 3-502 closed in on its objective, an airfield north of Qaysumah, on
.he twelfth. rLT,.e convoy drove directly there, while the remainder were trucked from
X;ng 10,alid Military City. -he task force mission was to defend the airfield
against an anticipated Iraqi attack. Seventh Corps did not have all of its per-
sonnel on the ground yet, so the First Cavalry Divisioi picked up the Second Bri-
gade to fill in the gaps.
Task Force 3-502 established themselves in an old dump just west of the air-
field. ln4tially the men had no enqineer support, and construction materials
