                              OPERATIONS DESERT SHIELD AND DESERT STORM

                  The 92nd Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) was alerted for

             Operation Desert Shield on 7 August 1990. Beginning August 7th, the

             battalion's first mission was to run convoy and port operations for

             the deployment of the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) from Ft.

             Stewart to Saudi Arabia (see Annex C-1,Task Organization). The

             battalion itself began deployment to Damman, Saudi Arabia on 15

             October 1990, where it subsequently went on to successfully

             complete 40 missions during Operation Desert Shield, and 68

             missions during Operation Desert Storm. Of the seven top-priority

             construction engineer projects, as designated by both XVIII

             Airborne Corps and VII Corps, the Black Diamonds were assigned and

             completed five in a little over six months. (see Annex C-1,Task

             Organization). This included completion of 566 kilometers of road

             construction (Main Supply Routes - MSR) for both corps,

             constructing a maJor-VII Corps logistics base (Log Base Echo), and

             a 4300' asphalted airstrip for theater casualty evacuation. The

             battalion relocated ('Jumped') a total of five times into, and out

             of, three countries - Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait; worked for

             two engineer brigades (20th Engineer Brigade - XVIII Airborne

             Corps, 7th Engineer Brigade - VII Corps); had a 204 man Combat

             Support Equipment Company (CSE) attached for command and all

             support; and was further augmented with some 40 extra civilian

             contract heavy construction vehicles in order to complete equipment

             intensive missions. Throughout, the battalion successfully
