returned stateside to Fort Stewart, Georgia. Delta Company was
reformed at Fort Gordon, Georgia. The 92nd Engineer Battalion
(Construction) was redesignated as the 92nd Engineer Battalion
(Combat)(Heavy) in June 1076. The designation was later changed to
the 92nd Engineer Combat ]Battalion (Heavy) or 92nd ECB(H).
In 1978, as part of the United States Central Command
(USCENTCOM) Rapid Deployment Force (RDF), the 92nd ECB(H) assumed
responsibility for wartime missions in both Western Europe and
Southwest Asia. This responsibility continues today. In support
of both theaters, the battalion trains annually with its CAPSTONE
counterparts, participates In engineer command exercises, and
supports REFORGER initiatives. While maintaining readiness, the
92nd supports the 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) at the Army
National Training Center (NTC) and deploys annually :to the Middle
East for in-country construction missions. The battalion also
trains its wartime mission through national initiatives known as
'Nation Building.' Under this program, the 92nd supports
Department of State and Defense political and economic initiatives
in the U.S., Central and South America. In May 1980, a company task
force was deployed to Fort Indian (3ap, Pennsylvania, in support of
the Cuban refugee resettlement program. On 16 June 1982, a
battalion task force was air deployed to Fort Picket, Virginia, in
support of the Department of Engineering and Housing construction
and renovation program.
During the period I August 1987 to 31 July 1988 the battalion
supported a series of world wide deployments both in support of
humanitarian assistance.
