MEMORANDUM FOR Cdr, VII Corps TAC, ATTN: S3
SUBJECT: Reconnissance of Iraqi Arimunition Sites
1. 3AD completed the reconnissance of three ammunition sites (IAW
Corps Frago 201-91) 091830c April 91. CWO Wesner, Deputy DAO, 3AD
and a representative from 403rd EOD conducted the reconnissance.
2. Site assessments follow:
a. Site I (QU596978): Iraqi ASP containing thousands of
various small arms, tank, artillery, mortar, RP02, and Sagger
rounds. These rounds are nostly loose and unboxed. Estimate it
would take approximately 170 forty foot trailers to move all of
it, with 70 soldier working for about one month.
b. Site 2 (QU817075): Unit Storage Site containing a few
thousand rounds of small arms, mortar and artillery ammunition,
all in bad condition. Estimate it would take approximately 25 S&PS
to move it, with 30 soldiers. Ammunition must be reboxed and would
require two weeks for completion. CBUs were found throughout the
area. 403rd EOD recommendation is to stay out of this area due to
danger to soldier safety.
c. Site 3 (QU813217): Iraqi ASP containing a few thousand
rounds of small arms, mortar and artillery ammunition. The
ammunition is loose and lying around the site. This area is very
hard to assess. It would probably take 25 S&Ps with 30 soldiers a
few weeks to rebox and clear the area. Area appears to have
already had munitions blown up by other Eng/EOD units. 403rd EOD
recommendation is to stay out of this area due to danger of
unstable ammunition.
3. Recommendation. Only Site I should be considered for
upload/transportation of ammunition. Other sites pose substantial
rsonnel. Recommend Sites 2 and 3 be
targetted for demolition by EOD personnel. Should Corps decide to
upload ammunition from Site 1, the Division will be able to
provide security forces only. DAO assets will be involved in TIER
II ammunition turn-in and redeployment RON site ammunition
recovery operations.
4. POC 03 Ops, 3AD, CPT Bartolotto 9-409-320-3301/3353.
