JULLS LONG REPORT
short-Falls could not be made without requiring two additional
inventory iterations after Desert Shield began. By automating
the final reports, the Division Chemical Office was able to
prepare unit and divisional rollups, compute excesses and
shortages, and calculate the funds required to fill unit and
centrally managed CDE shortages. Ist ID (M) had shortages in
both fielded equipment (hoods, kits, batteries, decontaminants)
and unfielded equipment (MI3 DAP, M17 LDS and CAM). All
shortages except the CAM were rectified after ist ID was
alerted.
(2) Sizing data for the Battledress Overgarment report
(installation managed) had two problems: First, units
characteristically submitted data limited to only 3 of the 8
possible sizes (S, M, and L). Second, all sizing was done with
the training suit (Chem Protective Overgarment) which, until
Desert Shield, was assumed to be the same stated wear size as
the BDO. When the discrepancy was discovered, soldiers were
afforded an opportunity to be sized in the BDO. Neverthelessg
sizing +or wet weather gear was not adjusted for wear over the
BDO, and the new Green Vinyl Overboot (SVO) became a substitute
-For the black chemical overboot.
(3) The division conducted a comprehensive mask
serviceability check and found several soldiers who could not be
fitted with the M17 series protective mask. NBC Division
requested an AMCCOM mask assistance team to DX unserviceable
masks, make direct issues, and assist hard-to-fit soldiers with
initial production M40 series masks. This service was
invaluable throughout Desert Shield.
(4) The advance +ielding of the M17 Lightweight Decon
System (LDS), alias SANATOR, was a success story +or deployment
preparation. A total of 57 Sanators, one per battalion and
separate company, replaced a limited number of heavier, less
mobile and aging M12 decon apparatus.
C. EXECUTION:
(1) In deference to space limitations and a desire to
train in country, the Commander, Ist ID CM), directed one
company per battalion to ship via surface means a full
complement of training suits for use by the entire battalion.
(2) lst ID (M) effectively accomplished the bulk draw of
installation-managed CDE (suits, gloves, helmet covers,
overboats, skin decon kits), and installation-managed Class VIII
NBC medical supplies of NAAK and PB tablets IAW a
synchronization matrix for unit deployment actions. While NAAK
was a recognized Army-wide shortage item, Fort Riley experienced
little difficulty in outfitting divisional, non-divisional, and
is RC units.
