MEMORANDUM FOR: Commander, XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery, ATTN:
G3, APO NY 09657
SUBJECT: Air Assault Training/Li+t Test@ 9 November 1990
1. The 5-Sth FAR conducted a lift test with a CH47D and M198
howitzer on 9 November 1990. The CH47D came from A Company,
2/159th Battalion, 18th Aviation Brigade. The purpose of the
training and test was to determine which loads could be
successfully lifted by the CH47D,in the Saudi climate. Previous
training with the 101st Airborne Division's (AA) CH47 in September
1990 was not as successful. We experienced problems with lift
capability and with "brown out" caused by blowing sand. The cooler
temperature and hook up site selected +or the recent training
contributed to successful mission.
2. The temperature at the start of the test (0600 hours) was 38
degrees F. The aircraft arrived with 3950 pounds.of fuel. The
5-Sth FAR tried three tests:
a. M198 with four rounds secured to the trails.
Approximate load: 16,200 pounds. The CH47D required 84% of lift
capacity and successfully lifted the load.
b. M198 with +our rounds and nine PAX. The approximate load
was 18,000 pounds. The remaining fuel weight was 3,300 pounds.
The craft required 83% of lift capacity.
C. M198 with an A22 bag containing 16 rounds and nine PAX.
The approximate load-was 20,000, fuel remaining was 2,650 pounds.
The aircraft: required 82% of lift and successfully lifted the load.
ly 86
degrees F.
3. Conclusion. The unit concluded that the CH47D would have no
problem lifting the M198 howitzer with ammunition and crew.
4. Problems encountered/solutions.
a. Due to reduced visibility the pilot and crew could not
see the inverted "Y" as they hovered over the load. The unit
recommends using a wider "Y" to use as a lateral drift point of
