                   c. Compressor/Scott Airpacks. No actual use of these items
             was required.

                  d. Suits - Intended for VIP Missions. Having all units bring
suits was unnecessary. Some suits were simply destroyed in the
process of moving around. Other than in country vips there
should be no requirement for VIP support from units engaged as
             these were.

                   e. Ordnance Locator. Never used. No mission where buried
             munitions were involved.

                   f. Bomb Suits. Not used. No IED's to work on and little
             additional application.

             Other Equipment Comments.

                a. Barret Rifle. Actually used very little. A takedown weapon
it takes some time to assemble and use. The efficient muzzle
brake reduces recoil but the directed blast makes the weapon
unpleasant to shoot. Regular rifles M-16, M-14, AK-47 were used
much more frequently. The AK47 was popular for the following
reasons: low power 7.62x39 round proved better than 5.56 for
detonating submunitions, light and easy to use, readily
             available.

                   b. Equipment load and organic transportation. All of the
equipment I was familiar with is still in the system but many
new items have been added. For example: The M122 Firing device
did not replace wire it is an addition. The robot, bomb suit,
ordnance locator, and Barret Rifle did not replace anything but
did add considerably to transportation requirements. At the same
time the detachments's ability to move cargo has been reduced by
removing the 2 1/2 Ton Shop Van and 1 1/2 Ton Trailer from the
MTOE. The detachments were unable to maneuver with all their
equipment. Piecemeal addition of items to MTOE over the years
been monitored for mobility impact. There was a serious
problem because units could not haul everything required in one
             lift.

                   c. Nobody mentioned the mine detector but as far as I know
none was ever used. This is a very old item with old technology
             and should be replaced.

                     b. Electrical power. A 3kw generator lacks adequate
capacity. A 10 kw generator is needed and it should burn diesel
like the vehicles. Commercial generators were in general more
reliable than military and required -less operator and
             maintenance attention.
