generally left their weapons loaded when they tried to escape.
Tanks and towed artillery were being recovered and moved around
with rounds chambered and full magazines.

Clearing the oil fields was a high priority in the
restoration process so fire fighting crews could extinguish the
well fires. In the process of clearing the oil fields CPT
            T
.ioover (38th EOD) discovered a long delay / anti-handling device
that had clear application as a booby trap or mine. More than 50
were eventually discovered stored in several locations but none
were ever located emplaced and functioning.

During March and April the Group was split between Kuwait
City and Riyadh. The section in Riyadh maintained contact with
ARCENT Main while the section in Kuwait City worked with ARCENT
Forward/Task Force Freedom and completed all the activities
            previously discussed.

Follow--ng efforts to clear Kuwait and demil of ammunition
and equipment in Iraq the group began the move back to Saudi
Arabia and preparation for departure. We expected to clear some
of the training ranges used by XVIlIth and VIIth Corps before
the conflict. However, both Corps opted for a 11 lets not and say
it's OK approach ". There were no postwar range clearances. Some
areas contaminated with explosive submunitions remained
            uncleared.

The chemical threat did not materialize. Iraq was expected
to use chemicals and considerable effort was made by all
personnel to be prepared in case they did. No chemical weapons
were found in any of the captured storage sites.

One unit (146th EOD) was designated to remain and provide
ons in Saudi Arabia and
support residual U.S. interests in Kuwait. The Control Teams
were directed to depart on a first in - first out basis. The
542nd left in April, 543rd in May, 512th in June. This was
accomplished in an orderly manner while satisfying requirements
to support ammunition retrograde. amnesty box hazards, and area
support requirements. All personnel returned by air; all
            equipment by sea.
