Activity in Kuwait involved the operation of a combined
(United States, British, Canadian, French, Saudi Arabian, and
Kuwaiti)/ joint (U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine) EOD
Control Center. A series of meetings was held to d4-vide
responsibility by geographic sector and type of work. Although
there was no written authority for this concept the level of
interest and cooperation was high and each organization signed
up to clear whatever it was capable of or wanted to do. The
Br4-@@ish had an excellent in house map making capability which
proved valuable and they shared with the other participants. The
U.S. Army operated a safe disposal/hold4-ng area accepting
ordnance and explosives from everyone. The U.S. Air Force did a
thorough clearance of the International A,-rport and a military
airfield. French soldiers cleared the beaches in Kuwait City of
              mines and obstacles.

Kuwait served as a base for some of our units assisting
VlIth Corps with its efforts to destroy Iraqi ammunition and
equipment. Distances were not great to the missile base at Umm
Qasr or the large ammunition supply point west of Basra so this
was a very convenient arrangement. Conducting demolition
operations simultaneously with combat operations, looking out
for refugees, and capturing prisoners involved more coordination
and control than normal for EOD.

Kuwait City also served as a base for ordnance intelligence
gathering activities from the Tech Center at Indianhead NOS,
Picatinny Arsenal, and Defense Intelligence Agency. As these
organizations arrived they were provided life support, equipment
transportation, escorts and guidance on likely places
to look. Other than needing to get on the ground sooner their
efforts were fairly successful. Supplementing them the 146th EOD
did considerable gathering on their own in areas further west.

Units based in Kuwait City swept and cleared large areas in
and around Safwan in support of the peace talks and various
              other humanitarian activities.

Considerable support was provided to Hr. Getz a retired
General officer who was gathering up Soviet ammunition to
distribute to our allies who happen to have Russian weapons
systems. There was a great deal to collect. The Iraqis had large
quantities of. ammunition and pushed it far forward. Many of the
storage sites were contaminated with air dropped munitions.

One of the problems encountered in clearing Kuwait City was
the large volume of unfired ordnance left by the Iraqis. EOD did
not have the lift or transportation capacity to move a
significant part of the abandoned ammunition. Because there was
no conventional ammunition unit with Task Force Freedom we were
expected to try. Another unforseen mission we were tasked with
was clearing Iraqi tanks and guns of ordnance. The Iraqis

                                                 4
