Introduction:
The formerly popular expression a come as you are war
describes this conflict. The Group was either building up or
ramping down with no period of sustained activity. The war was
an aberration in many respects: very brief, no enemy deep
battle, terrorism, or guerilla warfare, few booby traps. Events
moved so quickly that if an action required any significant lead
time it could not be accomplished in a timely manner. From the
time the last unit a--rived (745th) until the first unit departed
(18th) was approximately 90 days.
Experiences varied widely. A unit that spent the war
covering Riyadh or Dhahran had a much different challenge than
one maneuvering with a division or a regiment. Some units did
both. The 53rd EOD covered Dhahran most of the war but was also
the first to enter Kuwait City with Special Forces.
Deployment and Pre-Conflict:
lst EOD Group was formed provisionally from the 547th EOD
Control Team on 29 November, 1990 and deployed to Saudi Arabia.
Assigned to the Group were 24 Detachments drawn from FORSCOM,
National Guard, and USAREUR sources (19, 3, 2 respectively).
Note: the two USAREUR units were L-MTOE which were twice the
size of the H-MTOE units deployed from CONUS. There were three
Control Teams, two from FORSCOM and one from USAREUR.
Some of the detachments deployed as early as August 1990
and EOD build-up paralleled overall build-up of the total
expeditionary force. All units were stood up in time for the
commencement of hostilities.
lst EOD GP was assigned to ARCENT Headquarters in Riyadh
and
staff responsibility for coordinating with coalition forces and
other U.S. Service EOD operations. It was expected to provide
support to both Corps and Echelons Above Corps areas.
Early pre-conflict coordination involved several meetings
in Bahrain hosted by the U.S Navy and attended by
representatives from the U.S. Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps
as well as British Army, Navy, and A,-r Force EOD activities. At
these meetings it became apparent that while there was no
overall plan for EOD operations; units were in place and spread
around almost as well as if there had been one. The level of
cooperation at these meetings was very high and resulted in
agreement to share information and provide support across
service and national lines. These meetings set the positive tone
and framework used later during restoration operations in
Kuwait.
