        AFFU-543
        SUBJECT. After Action Reoort

eauioment and rations. The +iohtino DOSitions were a snao even in the
hard rackv around. The SEE oald for itself in allowina a unit to obtain
the needed favors and life slioc)ort in exchanc3e -For diacina bunkers. berms.
and latrine oits. I know of onlv one instance where it was used to
unearth a 5001b bomb (38th EDD in Kuwait).

           f. Tentaae. Our detachments moved nore freauentlv and often lived
out of their trucks -For davs. so their requirements are different than
ours. For us. we eventually arrived at sleeoina in four set)arate tents
(10 Deoole) as the ideal. We had three modular frame tents. one for the
i.unior soldiers. one for the senior NCO'S. and one +or the cac)tains. The
commander had a separate GP Small. This diSDersion Of Dersonnel was
laraelv to keec) c)eoole from oettina on each other's nerves. For us. auite
+ran@-.lv. it was necessary. bn the other hand. our collocated unit.'t@e
75th EOD (10 oeODle). all sledt in one GP Medium. Since our locations at
KKMC and Loa base Charlie were semipermanent (we SDent five weeks at each
olace). we were able to build DlVWOod floors for our tents. Thev make a
        world of difference.
Some units carried commercial three-man hex tents +or each resoonse
teams to carry. I don't know how this idea worked out. since manv units
oared down their tentaae to be more mobile.

          g. What worked and what didn't. We had absolutely no use +or the
shredder. FAX machine. STU III. and microfiche viewer/Drinter (we oave it
to Brouo. who also never used it). We also never needed the freezers and
ditioners we brouaht. which was laraelv a +unction of the weather.
        air con
We did have a tremendous need for our laotOD COMDuter and the small
refriaerators were areat. The kerosene
heaters we ourchased worked well with the oroder fuel (we aot a batch a+
bad kerosene once). but vou can't beat the ARMV DOt-bellv stove (it act
down to 29 dearees several nichts).

        S. MANNING. This oaraorac)h deals with how we staffed the unit to handle
the incident load and other responsibilities. At KKMC. we were reauired
to DUll niahttime ouard dutv. We had a section of the'Derimeter and had
about seven fiahtino DOSitions to man. One of these was an M2 .50 caliber
machine aun oasition. The auard was a two-man rovina oatral which also
reauired a seroeant-o+-the-cuard. This dutv Was SDlit between us and the
75th EOD. Comms was via AN/VRC-127 radio.
At the beoinnina a+ Desert Storml we manned the CP trailer twentv-+our
                           7
hours a dav. Ironlrallv. farther north at Loa Base Charlie. we had no
ouard resoonsibilities (we collocated with a combat sudoort hospital). and
@id not man Our CP constantly. What we did do. was to"Man the 6orDs Rear
CP Area Damace Control cell startina on a round-the clock basis and
eventually taderina down to a 0600-2200 stint. As I've said earlier.
comms back to our camo was via AN/VRC-127 with external antenna. The
radio at our camd was rotated niahtlv from tent to tent.
Once in Kuwait Citv. the established orocedure was to man the
ioint/international E66 Cell durina the dav with the Ooerations Officer
and NCO and keed a CO on dutv at nicht. Nobodv can complain about not
oettin(3 enouah sleer3 durino this war-. which was a orimarv concern to me.
