SUBJECT- After Action Reoort
these radios. That no one's fault but their own.- it's a CTA item and a
unit should order as manv as thev need. This radio is suderb +or
controllina convovs and also works well between EOD members resoondina to
incidents. Everv soldier should have one.
We had CEOI's for everv unit within both coros as well as all the EAC
units and Marines. Thev were relatively easv to use and included a master
call sion cross-reference book. There were no authentication tables nor
any means a+ encrvotina. MSG Hall of the 147th EOD devised an ingenious
method of encodina arid coordinates bv usina suffixes.
7. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT.
a. Small Arms. While we at control didn't have a lot of hands-on
experience with the various EOD tools. I do have some Dersonal
observations. A lot of attention was a3.ven to small arms disruotion. and
rightfully so. since this method accounted +or manv hundreds of
submunitions beina sa+elv destroyed. Althouah I anlv fired the Barrett
+or Dractice and not at an actual munition. I can sav the thina is not
worth the bulk. eXDense. and waste a+ ammunition. Nothina I know of that
was shot at could not have been handled bv a smaller caliber weadon.
Hav:@Lna actuallv ootted submltnitions with an M16A2 and various Kalashnikov
rifles. I can sav the 5.56mm and 7.62mm familv a+ cartridoes are ouite
adeaua@e. mv recommendation is a scooed M16 and scooed 7.62mm NATO
caliber rifle Der team.
b. Navioation. In the desert environment. an electronic naviaation
aid was essential eauidment. We had issued a Loran svstem in the form of
one of the "Vovacer'; models. This is a commercial item Drimarilv desioned
for boaters. While it worked. it is COMDlicated and subject to be
inaccurate. Some units had a MILSPEC device thev called "Sluoaer".
that is the correct nomenclature. I have seen it
advertised in "Armv" maaazine and is ouite ruaaed and simole. Almost EOD
tech-oroo+. Units should be authorized one Der vehicle.
C. Micro-fiche. Our c)ortable microfiche viewers could be iMDroved.
It should have MUltiDle Dower sources inclltdina solar. Microfiche is nice
and comdact. but sure is a oain in the butt to use.
d. Generators. The consensus is that the comercial 2.2 and 3.3kW
aenerators are the wav to ao. These aenerators were a bia success storv.
Easv to use and maintain. thev keot units ooerational Iona after the
militarv Dieces of iunk died. At control. we used both a 2.2 and 3.3kW UD
until we obtained a militarv 15kW diesel model. at which time we suodlied
Dower to both ourselves and the 75th EOD. This aenerator worked well.
althouch we had no c)rime mover for it (the 75th oulled it to Kuwait with
the SE@).
e. SEE. Mv exoerience was onlv to watch the SEE in action dicaina
bunkers and +iohtinc3 oositions. The bunker it allowed us to build at KKMC
.orior to the Scud attacks was an encineerina wonder. It had a roo+ made
a+ two 463L Dallets and could hold all 19 of us Dlus chemical defense
