                                                                       GUIDE

GUIDE TO ABBREVIATIONS IN EOD JOURNAL

The computer generated spreadsheet used codes to allow calculation of totals and identification of
activities. Below are the explanation of abbreviations and actions contained in the Desert Storm EOD
             Journals:

             ACTMTY CODE

                         1. Incidents are input using unit number followed by chronological sequence number and
then "DS" for Desert Shield / Storm., Example: the 3rd EOD Det responds to their fifth
incident which would be listed as '3-005-DS" followed by the DTG of receipt of mission.

                         2. Other activities only receive the DTG of the acW4 start time.

             CATEGORY

EOD incidents are assigned a category of response priority to define actions for the team
leader on site. Initial actions can be taken (i.e. building berms) to reduce the hazard and category.

A Constitute a grave and immediate threat to war fight effort. Normally assigned
to weapons of mass destructon, potential widespread contamination or
affect critical resource of the theater preventing the use of that resource (i.e.
closing the airfield during critical operations). The EOD team survival in this
operation is secondary to mission success (i.e. disregard safe waiting time
for battery bleed off on electronic fuzes - team moves in immediately). If initial
actions can be taken (i.e. build hasty protective berm) reducing hazard then
an updated category vall be applied changing "A" to "A / B' reflecting change
                               to a category B situation.

B Constitute an indirect threat (i.e. bomb in one section of an ASP that can be
avoided until fuzing batteries discharge without critical affect on war mission).
                                     Normal safe wailing times observed.

c Constitute little or no threat (i.e. submuniflons off of an MSR in area not traveled
but individuals including civilians may wander into eventually). Responded to
after Category A and B incidents.

D Constitute no threat at present and Kerns marked and recorded for future disposal.
Example might include munitions dropped into an area far from inhabited routes or
base camps that present no reasonable hazard to any personnel.
