During Operation Desert Shield/Storm, disease, non-combat
injury rates were less than half to one-third of what was
predicted. Personnel were immunized prior to being deployed to the
theater. They were immunized for all diseases known or thought to
exist in the AOR. Personnel were monitored after arriving in
country and those needing immunizations were identified. Due to
the. living and working accommodations in the Riyadh area (Eskan
Village), the medical threat was not as visible as it would be in
field units. Preventive medicine practices were strictly enforced.
Personnel only used bottled water for cooking and drinking. Dining
            facilities purchased food supplies through approved sources;
garbage was removed at regular intervals and the sites were
regularly inspected. Heat injuries, if any were rare; almost all
buildings had air conditioning available. Being located at a fixed
facility, insects were kept under control. Human waste was not a
problem; bathrooms with running water were readily available.
Since a fence was around Eskan Village, wild and domestic animals
were kept under control. Preventive medicine personnel monitored
the medical threat closely and alerted personnel to any changes in
            it.

In the area of Professional Services, the following
            operational highlights occurred:
                     1. Nursing annex to the 244th Medical Group OPORD 001
                     2. Development of abbreviated (6-8 hours) CLS course
                     3. Directed immunization clinics
                     4. Provided guidance to hospital chief nurses.
                          Developed casualty care plan
                     6. Facilitated and procured supply of aid bags and other
 to non medical units.
                     7. Conducted weekly Chief Nurse meetings
                     8. Distributed survey questionnaires approved for theater
wide use by ARCENT MEDCOM Chief Nurse
