SUBJECT: Rule Out Salmonella Food Poisoning Outbreak Coupled
with Viral Gastroenteritis
1. The advance party of 4th Bn, 27th FO (i.iF@LS) departed Iraq and
arrived in Saudi Arabia on or about the 7 of April 1991. Our
site was set up in zkccc)rdance with standard operational proceed-
ores since arrival in the theatre of operations i.e. Dec 9C).
On the Otli of April 19'71, three (--,) patients reported to the R-@S
with complaints of headache, myalgias, febrile, chills,
nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea without bright
red rectal bleeding or melena. Diagnosis- Viral Gastrcienteri'@is
Treatment: Symptomatic with resolution of same.
2. The main body of 4th BN, 27th FA (MLRS) departed Iraq and
arrived in Saudi Arabia on or about the 9 of April 1991.
During our time in theatre there have been no reported episodes
of gastroentestinal complaints.
:7. On the 11 of April 1991, approximately at 21'@,O hours soldiers
from 4/27 began presenting to the 4/27 FA BAS with the complaints
ea,
without bright red rectal bleeding or melena. Patients w@re
orthostatic positive and afebrile. A total of 94 patients -ere
seen from beforementioned time till l@" April 1?91. On 1-1 CPri"-
1991 -4 patients presented with the same complaints. Al"
patients were treated with L-actated Ringers for fluid and
electrolyte replenishment, Phenergan or Compa--ine IPI, Dr-.nns-@@-I
and ImmodiL(fn, with resolution of symptoms within -14-@'@ hour--,
