units closed on TRA Wendy and were operational on 14
J,AnLtary 91.
6. Operation Desert Storm, the air, campaign, began on i7
Janu,Ry,y i991, is US and Coalition Air Forces bellari a
devastating air war in response to Iraq'S flilltre to
withdraw its forces from Kuwait, in accordance with United
Nations sanctioned deadline of 15 January 1991. The lst
Cav and the 43rd CSG were prepared and stood ready to
perform their, %ssigned missions.
7. Upon closure at -!-AA Wendy on 14 January 1991, the 43e-d
CSG was attached to 2E@nd SUPICOM, ARCENT during the air
campaign. Just prior to the commencement of the ground
war, on 24 February 1991, 43rd CSG was attached to VII
Corps. The CSG was then further attached to 2nd COSCOM,
VII COT-Ps. In fact, the 43@,d CSG was Attached to two
COSCOlyis, two corps, and one SUPCOM, and changed hiphe'r
headquarters on five different occasions during the
deployment. However, it was the mission statement from
Lieutenant Generil William B. Pligonis, Commanding Gerier@xi,
22)D SUPCOM, ARCENI- that maintained the liaison between the
/,3rd CSG and the lst Cav, by keeping the 43rd CS in a
permanent direct support (albeit OPCON) role to the Ist
C,xv. It was this dedicated support relationship which led
the 43rd CSG to apply new innovative support structures
which were designed to meet -the unique requirements of .1
ional maneuver, reserve.
S. The z@3r,d CSG remxiried at -f'AA Wendy until 6 Febri-tEtry
1991 while the air war continued. The Ist C@iv received
the mission, on 12 Jan,-tai-y 1991, to assume Et hasty
defensive position vicinity Hafir Al Batin (i\IS940456) to
protect the approach to King Khilid Military City (KKMC),
which housed major- US ind coalition headquarters and
logistics br@es. The deployment of the lst Cav was a
security measure against any preemptive attack by Iraqi
forces using the Wadi Al B@A-tin approach, which at this
crucial time could have disrupted the deployment of VII
Cat,ps forces which were arriving in country and moving to
staging areas east of L@KMC. On 30 JEtnLtary 1991, based on
news -Lhtt the Syritn forces would not Attack Iraqi forces
on I-r-aqi soil, the Ist Cav moved North to relieve Syrian
forces along the Iriqi-Saudi border from PTO302OQI to
PT580189. To facilitate support, 43rd CSG displaced from
