          Subject: Biological/Chemical Detection Teams (U)

          FACTS:

          1. The 9th Chemical Co (-) OPCON to the Foreign Military
Intelligence Battalion (FMIB) of the 513th MI Bdo has deployed
six biological/chemical sampling teams within the theater. The
six biological/chemical teams provide biological detection and
stand off chemical detection in su@port of SOCCENT, MARCENT and
          ARCENT.

          2. The six teams of three soldiers each will be deployed to
ase camps KKMC (ARCENT MCP), Riyadh (513th MI Sde), Al Khobar
FMIS), Al Jubail (MARCENT)@ Ras Safania (MARCENT @and Al Mishxs
SOCCENT). The teams will be dispatched from the base camp sites
0 investigate suspect BW/chemical attacks within an assigned
ector. J3 Chemical, CENTCOM will initiate all monitoring orders
hrough the G2 channels via TAC phone lines. take@
          3. (U) Each of six teams is equipped with a XM2 Biological
Sampler and five of six teams are equipped with the XM21 Remote
Sensing Chemical Agent Alarm. The team has a HMMWV as organic
          transportation.

          4. (9) The XM2 Biological Sampler is capable of collecting
airborne biological samples and quickly screens them for
suspected biological agents. Sampling time is in 4S minute
intervals. Suspect biological samples after field screening are
delivered to the Theater Area Medical Lab (TAML) in Al Jubail for
further analysis. Further, a portion of the sample will be
ry tests.
Unrefrigerated biological samples have a shelflife of 2 hours.
Each team has refrigeration capability, coolers with chemical ice
          packs.

          5. The XM21 Remote Sensing Chemical Agent Alarm is designed
to detect blister and nerve agents from a stand off distance of
three miles. The XM21 alarm is designed to operate from a fixed
field location. Although the system is portable it cannot
operate while on the move. It is best deployed if operated
upwind from a fixed site, i.e. log bases.

          6. (@ The biological/chemical detection teams are designed to
operate both the XM2 and the XM21 from one location.
          7. @ ) A second increment of 9th Chemical Co (-) will deploy
O/A 4 Feb 91 and provide three more XM2 sampling teams. Proposed
deployment site for these teams are Log Base Echo (VII Corps),
Log Base Whiskey (XVIII ABN Corps), and An Nu'A-yriyah (SUPCOM).
