TACTICAL EMPLOYMENT CONCEPTS
SECTION 11
General. The XM21 RSCAAL and the complimentary NBC Reconnaissance System
(NBCRS) are two important hazard avoidance tools. The XM21 provides a general
screening of potential hazard areas and the NBC Reconnaissance System (NBCRS)
vehicles are the specialized tools to develop more detailed information.
Vission_plgLining. There is no one "right method of employment" +or all
tactical situations. The XM21 has strengths and weaknesses just like any other
type of military equipment. Employment of the XM21 must be tailored to meet
the specific situation, capabilities of the detector, and the tactical needs.
For this reason, the staff chemical officer or senior chemical NCO is an
.important component in the overall hazard avoidance system. It is common for
one or two of the mission profiles to closely follow one another, (e.g., Point
Surveillance and Area Surveillance). It is a common mistake to assume that the
best use of the XM21 is to always mount it upon the NBCRS. Some missions may
require that the XM21 provide support at locations far removed from the
location of the NBCRS. Tailoring the employment technique to match the scheme
of maneuver of the supported commander often means that other assets may be
required to employ the XM21. Task organization, the temporary grouping a+
forces designed to accomplish a particular mission, is one method of obtaining
other assets to perform tripod mounted XM21 missions.
Combat tailoring or task organization will provide the following
capabilities:
0 SCAN A DEFENSIVE FRONT
0 VECTOR BATTLEFIELD ASSETS
MONITOR BARRIERS AND OBSTACLES
* MONITOR AVENUES OF APPROACH
0 MONITOR BRIDGES, ROAD INTERSECTION AND OTHER POINT TARGETS
0 ASSIST FRIENDLY FORCES IN MOVEMENT CONTROL
0 EXTEND THE CAPABILITIES OF OTHER DETECTION ASSETS
* CONFIRM OR DENY INFORMATION COLLECTED BY OTHER MEANS
0 MONITOR POSSIBLE REAR AND FORWARD AREA DROP/LANDING ZONES
* SEARCH AREAS BETWEEN AND ADJACENT TO ENEMY AND FRIENDLY FORCES
