                                      INFORMATION PAPER

SLTBJECT: Simulator, Projectile Airburst. Liquid Mg (SPAL)

            1. Purpose. Provide information on SPAL, its components and
            use.

            2. Facts.
                a. The SPAL, when fired, simulates a toxic rain attack. it
provides a realistic simulated persistent agent enabling
soldiers to perform detection 'and decontamination procedures for
            personnel and equipment.

                b. Major components consist of:

                     (1) Projector assemblies (20 ea).

                     (2) Actuating charges (20 ea).
                     (3) 5.5 gallons (21 liters) Chemical Agent Simulant.

                     (4) Accessories (caps, plugs, faucet).
                C. Five fired projector assemblies will produce a 50 meter
wide band of toxic agent simulant, 100 meters downwind
(approximately 150 by 300 feet). The fiber board/shipping
container controls the direction of each bottle when fired. it
has a threaded bushing in center of the base for implanting
            spike.
                d. The Chemical Agent Simulant is composed of 90%
Polyethylene Glycol 200 (PEG-200) and 10% water. It causes
color changes in chemical agent detector paper in much the same
way as liquid toxic chemical agents.
