                 FORWARD OPERATING BASE OASIS - OCTOBER


                          In late September 2cl EDE TF.receivc-d the mission to
                 for and build FOB OASIS, around the town of C@1F.%ryat al St.Afl.a.
                 In early October 1/602 IN was the first unit. t-o deploy the
                 170 miles to FOB OASIS by BLAS, helicopter and military ground

                 Covering Force Operatioi-i..               The I'F developed t-hrec- scenarios
                 for an Iraqi attack ii-itzl i@.5-sector and began conducting
                 various exercises and rehearsals.
                          On October 18 a TF                                  Exercise (COMEX)
                 tested the Brigade's Command FM, HF, cbservatijdn a)-id
                 intelligence (0/1), administrative and logistics (A/L) FM, FD
                 nets and the battalion internal nets. During the COMEX the
                 brigade TAC CP displaced.
                          On October 19 a TF sand table rehearsal Was Conducted
                 f@r the Northern sector.
                          On October 20 the TF conducted a full-force rehearsal of
                 the covering force mission. Occupation of sector,
                 engagements within sector, and delay to passage points were
                 rehearsed. The rehearsal provided an opportunity to work the
                 command and control and synchronization of the TF mission.
                          The TF CP at FOB OASIS was located in the town Qaryat al
                 Sufla. Sufla was an abandoned when the neighboring town,
                 Qary@t al Ulya, was built a decade or two earlier. The Emir,
                 or ruler, of Ulya had jurisdiction over S6fla. The TF
                 command group was oft-en in contact with the Erj)ir, Liaison
                 was necessary because in the event of an Iraqi attack Ulya
                 would have to be quickly evacuated. Civil Affairs
                 specialists were also involved in the planning and
                 coordination of the evacuation.
                          The TF divided Sufla's buildings into two main sections.
                 One section was used as living quarters for the TF staff and
