                               INFORMATION PAPER


     SUBJECT: Protective Mask/Carrier Repair and Rebuild


     1. Purpose. To identify protective mask/carrier repair
     capabilities, carrier availability, and unserviceable mask
     turn-in procedures.

     2. Facts.

         a. Daily mask wear and carry, abrasive effqrts of
     wind-driven sand, and challenging training have accelerated
     protective mask carrier deterioration.

         h. The NICP is at zero balance for M15AI carriers.     Action
    ,to procur@ 400K carriers has been initiated. Delivery @of
     first 4ok to the NICP is expected in Feb 91.

         C. Thirty thousand M15Al mask carriers    (condition  code  B)
     have been identified at Pine Bluff Arsenal (PBA), AR.    Expedited
     shipment of these items has been requested.

         d. AMCCOM has announced that turn in and retrograde of
     condition code A carriers from other theaters is expected to meet
     all current Desert Shield requirements during Nov 90.

         e. Substitution of Mll and M40 mask carriers is also being
     worked with AMCCOM as an option to the current carrier shortage.

         f. XVIII Abn Corps msg, 150941Z Oct 90, Subj: M15Al Mask
     carriers, authorized local repair of carriers by field servicd
     units or local contract.

         g. The 259th and 16th Field Service Companies can make minor
     sewing repairs (waist straps) to mask carriers.

         h. DESCOM is establishing a repair/rebuild facility to
     repair carriers, conduct depot repair of M17-series protective
     masks and to do limited repairs to M24/M25AI masks.
