INFOP14ATION PAPER
SUWECT: Special Fitting for Agent Protective masks
1. Purpose: To provide information concerning provision of agent
protective masks for personnel who can't achieve face fit with the
current standard masks.
2. Facts.
a. The currently fielded protective masks Mg, M17Al, M24 and
M25 have a limited range of sizes (S,, Ml & L). The M17A2 mask
added an XS size. This range of masks will fit over 95% of all
soldiers.
b. Until the early to mid 1980's the US Army Chemical
Research and Development Engineering Center (CRDEC) had a Special
Pit Program. A team would go out and by adding or cutting out
rubber specially fit a mask. This was not the best way to ensure
continued protection. Special fitting was eliminated several years
ago when CRDEC expected to field the M40 series protective mask.
Due to use of new mask materials and design the M40 series, in 3
sizes (S, N & L), will fit close to 100% of our soldiers.
C. The M40 series has not yet been officially fielded.
Replacement parts and filters are not generally available.
d. If a difficult to fit soldier absolutely requires a
protective mask CRDEC will provide a prototype M40 series mask
which 14AY provide a fit. Their reqaest protocol and an example
memorandum are attached.
