           INFORMATION MEMORANDUM FOR The Chief of Staff

           STJBJECT: Mask Rework Operation (U)

           1. (U) A meeting was conducted 26 Dec 90 at the mask repair
           facility in Dhahran to ascertain the magnitude of the alleged mask
           unserviceability issue raised by XVIII Abn Corps.

           2         The Chemical Research, Development and Engineering Center
           (CRDEC) ;gill send a subject matter expert team to the in-country
           mask maintenance facility in early Jan 91. They will provide a
           quantitative assessment of M17 Protective Mask serviceability in
           two XVIII Abn Corps units. They will test a total of 340 masks in
           combat and combat support units. Mask fit will first be tested
           using the XM41 Mask ValiiYdtitYn Dev7i @@o determine if the soldier
           is achieving an adequate sea t4i-Eh--Che mask. The mask will then
           be tested with the M14 Mask Test I)eiFice@urrently being used in
           country to verify a@     repairs- .1 the-purpose of @he assessment is
           to demonstrate that masks may iail the M14 test, which measures
           production acceptance standards, but the mask provides adequate
           protection to the soldier under field conditions.
