MEDICAL LESSONS LEARNED
DESERT SHIELD/STORM
CATEGORY: TRAINING

ISSUE ITEM #:

SUBJECT: CREDENTIALING OF PROVIDERS

BACKGROUND: Providers musk be credentialed at each medical facility where they are assigned
to practice. At some facilities, providers were given provisional privileges, and at other
facilities they could not practice until the full credentialing process was completed. Also,
physicians and nurses were treated differently.

DISCUSSION: All providers are crndentialed either by their unit or the facility in which they
train. However, if they go to some other facility, their credentials and privileges must be
validated by that facility. The question is how to speed Up this process when we are dealing
with a contingency action. If the professional has been credentialed by an active duty
medical treatment facility, could their privilege b. transferred? Could
civilian credentialing be accepted on a temporary basis

ACTION RECOMMENDED: HQ ARPC/SO could coordinate the transfer of credential folders when an
IMA is assigned to a medical treatment
facility where he does not train. A consistent, policy needs to
be developed for all non-facility credentialed providers.
