VI.   CONCLUSION

The Fox vehicle is a useful tool for warning, detecting, and marking chemical warfare agent contamination. There was a critical need for a mobile NBC detection capability that was not initially present during the build-up of US forces in the Gulf. The US government accepted the fact that although the Fox offered improvements over existing equipment, it also had limitations. Unfortunately, many of these improvements and limitations were not well understood, resulting in misunderstandings about the Fox vehicle. This paper explains the Fox vehicle to help clarify how it was used in the Gulf War. Understanding the Fox vehicle will assist in understanding other narratives as well. Since the Gulf War, the US has made or has planned improvements in doctrine, training, and equipment for the Fox to further increase capabilities for potential future conflicts. Together with these improvements and a better understanding of its role in Desert Storm, the Fox vehicle should continue to enhance US force protection from emerging threats in the 21st century.
