EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 27 Aug 90
MEDICAL DEFENSE AGAINST BOTULINUM TOXINS (BT) FOR OPERATION
DESERT SHIELD. @ (Arm-,r OTSG)
Although the current Army protective masks and collective
protection will protect the soldiers, there is no real time
detector system to alert service members. The effects of inhaled
BT exposure is paralysis with a high fatality rate. Current
vaccine only covers five (A-E) of the seven BT strains. Iraq has
obtained a strain which our vaccine does not cover. Current
vaccine does provide some immunity. Side effects are similar to a
typhoid shot. Current vaccine availability is limited.
vaccination is recommended for select service members. Vaccination
program will be directed/prioritized by CENTCOM and supported by
the Services Medical Departments. PROVIDE MEMO
