                                   EXECUTIVE SUMMARY               27 Aug 90

             MEDICAL DEFENSE AGAINST ANT @ X (AX) FOR OPERATION DESERT
        SHIELD.  @ (Army OTSG) Intelligence sources indicate that Iraq has
        weaponized AX. AX can be disseminated as an aerosol by artillery,
        rockets, aircraft, and terrorist teams. Although current Army
        protective masks and collective protection will protect the
        soldiers, there is no real time detector system to alert service
        members (SM). Fatality for symptomatic pulmonary.anthrax in
        unvaccinated SM is greater than 90 percent. There is a vaccine for
        AX. Two doses given 14 days apart provide a level of protection.
        Side effects are similar to a typhoid shot. on 22 Aug 90, the
        Services Surgeons General and the ASD Health Affairs concurred with
        the recommendation to vaccinate the entire force in AOR. Each
        service member will,receive three doses of vaccine. Vaccination
        program will be directed/prioritized by CENTCOM and supported by the
        Services Medical Departments. PROVIDE MEMO
