5. Batulinum Toxin
a. Pre-Exposure Vaccination - Botulinum vaccine (toxoid)
should be given in 0.5 ml doses deep subcutaneously at day 0, 14,
and 84 with protective levels of antibodies established two weeks
following the third dose. (Booster dose is given at one year.)
b. Post-Exposure Treatment
(1) The botulinum antitoxin (despeciated equine) is
available in limited quantities for the treatment of botulinum-
exposed patients. Antitoxin is available for treatment only; it
will be given only to symptomatic patients or members of cohort
units judged to be definitely exposed but who may be
presymptonatic. Antitoxin is administered under protocol
intravenously.
(2) Decision to use botulinum antitoxin is made by medical
authorities.
