            SUBJECT: Diagnosis of BW Agents and Endemic Diseases,              :ion
            Desert Shield

            ISSUE: Biological warfare (BW) agents and naturally oc             ig
            diseases represent a significant threat to personnel de]           I in
            Operation Desert Shield. Augmention of existing clinic,
            diagnostic capabilities with specially developed procedi           @or
            the diagnosis of these medical threats is needed. Propi            Lat
            special diagnostic teams be created and deployed to the            er
            of operation and the medical evacuation sites as follow@

            1. FACTS.

                a. Personnel requirements: Two independent teams i
            needed, with centralized support from USAMRIID. Each ti
            composed of an 0-3/0-4 MS/VC officer and 2 E-4/E-5 medi(
            technicians (advanced medical laboratory trained), 92B/(

                b. Locations: One laboratory placed in the theate)
            operations and one laboratory placed in the 10th MED
            Germany.

                c. Capabilities: Rapid diagnosis of BW agents frop
            clinically ill personnel (Anthrax, Staphylococcal enterc           S,
            and Clostridium perfringens), and naturally occurring dJ           s
            (hemorrhagic fevers, arboviral fevers, Q fever, Mediterl
            Spotted fever, endemic and epidemic typhus) will be don@
            deployed teams. Autopsy specimens from mass casualties             be
            transported directly to USAMRIID for analysis (botulinun           n,
            others).

                d. Equipment: All procedures use non-infectious, r
    be
            supplied as needed from USAMRIID.

                e. Training: Training provided by USAMRIID.

                f. Supplies: Consumable supplies and critical reag
            provided by USAMRIID.
