training on medical aspects of chen-dcal and biological warfare from US Army medical
experts. This CONUS training was considered extremely beneficial and was later
provided to Ist MARDRV medical personnel in SWA.40
(S) Alcl@ough initially not well trained and equipped medical personnel
continually improved their knowledge and capabilities during the build-up for Desert
Storm. Navy medical personnel significantly improved their skills and knowledge about
NBC defense and played a key role in developing policy for NBC medicants and casualty
decon. The general impression from interviews was that medical personnel were
trained and ready to handle chemical casualties by the beginning of the ground war.
Unit SOP's for chen-xical casualty handling had been established. AJI front-Une units
interviewed had exercised -,heir casualty teams by set-up and dry-run of casualty
decontan-dnation and clearing sites.
