                     (S) NBC training initially concentrated on individual protective measures prior to
               deployment and during the early stages of Desert Shield. Because of the 10 August 90
               rapid deployment of 7th MEB and units from Ist MEB, the bulk of tr@L@g in CONUS
               was on refresher NBC Defense individual Survival Measures (ISM).29 Early deploying I
               MEF forces broadened NBC training objectives for individual training after arrival in
               Saudi Arabia. In Saudi, individual training was focused not just on surviving a chen-dcal
               attack, but continuing assigned missions. This early training included special training
               on the Iraqi threat, individual protective measures and equipment, effects of desert heat
               in NBC defense, nerve agent antidote buddy treatment, and use of the mask drinking
               system. 3 0

                      (S) By October the Marine Corps had NBC skills sustainment training underway.
