            1. Per   reference (a) the following    human interest story is
            submitted:                               I
                       Late afternoon of 26 February 1991, 17/1-@ was in its
                       firing positions 6 miles southwest of Kuwait Interna-
                       tional Airport. The battalion had taken 26 Enemy
                       Prisoners of War that day and was making preparations
                       to turn then into the EPW compound located in the
                       vicinity of Task Force Ripper's Command Post.
                       The afternoon was cold and tne winds from the north
                       guaranteed a further drop in the temperature. The
                       oily smoke from the oil field firee I:E-r-t the "nicle..wi,
                       winter" effect in notion. Rain was beginning to fall.
                       The EPWs were exposed t.@ l,he weathe@ an..J 'o.)kt-cl
                       absolutely Kiserable.     Wt.ile they were t#L-in-.i fe.J at,J
                       given water-, the Battalion Commander, L-c-6ct?rned for
                       their welfare, ordered our only tent set up to house
                       them and to provide shelter avainst the weataer.
                       The Marines gave then mats to sleep on, coats to wear,
                       and blankets to keep them warii. Our Mal,ines contjpue.-.t
                       to live in their fighting holes.
                       The guards noticed that the Iraqi prisone-s were
                       consuming large amount@ of water. The Doctor, w2.s
                       called and after a cursory examination, E or the
                     -.prisoners were taken to the Battalion Aid Station
                       for further treatment. Two of the prisoners were
                       completely dehydrated and one had to be given an IV.
                       The others were treated for infected w.?i, w-:.unds,
                       dysentaria, bruised ribs and a urinary stone.
                       The

                       An Iraqi Lieutenant, who spoke english, Interpreted
                       the-Dc.ctor's explanation of the medical ;id his men
                       were receiving in order to assure the Ca.-tiin that his
                       men were being treated properly.
                       Medical cards were filled out on each mail in order
                       that a temporary history of medical treatment could b,-
                       given to tt,e aid Station At the neyt EPW h.:@lding-
                       compound.   The Iraqi Cap.tair@ commented test this t4AS
                       better care than t.is men had ever receive,4 from t@lnl,-
                       own Army. The Iraqi soldiers thanked everyone tire and
                        ga2.n for the care they had received.
