was made with an enemy forward observerpadjusting rounds. Captain
Briggs quickly reduced this threat using an AH-1 with TOW missile.
His quick and courageous actions ensured maintenance a+ the
battalion's momentum forward.
As the first unit through the second mine+ield and despite
finding both flanks open, Captain Briggs methodically maneuvered
his company forward, securing a series of six company size enemy
strong points. The skill and velocity of his company's movements
prevented the numerically superior enemy from establishing a
secondary defense and quickly convinced the Iraqi infantry to give
up the fight. During the first day, Company C captured 800 EPWs
from the Iraqi 7th and 14th Infantry Divisions as well as
destroying two platoons a+ T-55 tanks and a reinforced battery of
122mm howitzers.
Soon after crossing the Line of Departure on 25 February 1991,
Company C engaged multiple enemy armor targets to the front and
flanks. After destroying a platoon reinforced of tanks, visibility
became restricted due to fog and burning enemy vehicles. Realizing
that numerous enemy vehicles still remained in his zone of advance
he moved his command vehicle well within main tank gun range to the
front a+ his tactical formation and coordinated numerous tank
engagements. During this period enemy targets were being destroyed
at less than 300 meters. His actions showed total disregard for
his own personal safety and total dedication to mission
accomplishment. He continued to take the battle to the heart of
the enemy until he consolidated his company in the defense and
prepared for a enemy armor counterattack that afternoon. Captain
Briggs and Company C were not to slow down until the cessation a+
hostilities. During the push north, as the battalion approached
AL-Jahra, Company C continued to take EPW's, engaged and destroyed
T-55 and T-62 tanks, and BMPs from the Iraqi Sth Mechanized
Brigade, 3d Armored Division, as weli as T-55 tanks and MTLB
armored personnel carriers from the lst Mechanized Infantry
Division. Due to his personal leadership, his men reduced
countless numbers of enemy positions and destroyed in excess of 30
tanks, BMP and other vehicles.
On several occasions of almost total darkness, brought about
both by adverse weather and oil fires, Captain Briggs personally
moved about, at risk to his own life, to lead, inspire and counsel
his men. His total composure and coolness under dangerous and
stressful conditions inspired everyone.
The gallantry and intrepidity displayed by Captain Briggs
ensured the success of Company C and contributed significantly to
the overall success of Operation Desert Storm.
