PROPOSED CITATION
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting
the SILVER STAR MEDAL to
LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRIAN M. YOUNGS
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during
OPERATION DESERT STORM while serving as the Commanding Officer, 2d
Battalion, 2d Marines, attached to 6th Marines(-)(Rein), 2d Marine
Division, FMF in the Emirate of Kuwait from 24-27 February 1991. Moving
to an exposed vantage point in full view of the enemy, Lieutenant
Colonel Youngs directed his forces in a violent and sustained attack
against enemy forces defending heavily fortified positions protected by
two complex minefields. Leading his men forward under continuous enemy
fire, he breached his two assigned breach lanes within the heavily
defended minsfield only to find an Iraqi brigade strongpoint directly to
his front. Unable to maneuver around the position, he forged ahead with
a violent and massive forward assault into the enemy trench lines and
fortifications, overrunning the brigade position and causing the enemy
to flee or surrender. Aggressively and relentlessly he maneuvered his
battalion in pursuing the enemy for grueling three days, never allowing
them a chance to organize a defense or conduct a counterattack
of any significance. His rapid advance and successful blockade of a
major highway on the outskirts of Kuwait City devastated the fleeing
enemy force and helped ensure the early liberation of the city. His
actions resulted in over 100 enemy vehicles and heavy weapons destroyed
or captured and over 2000 enemy soldiers captured. By his daring
actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risk,
Lieutenant Colonel Youngs upheld the highest traditions of the United
States Naval Service.'
For the President,
