Seven.ty of the captured EPWs were officers. Seven T-55s, one T-62, two MTLBS,
1 BRDM and six armed bunkers were destroyed by AT (TOW) Company. Five trucks
and a supply trailer were also destroyed. Three T-62 tanks, one BMP, two
APCS, and two MTCBs were captured. One hundred and sixty enemy bunkers were
cleared. Forty-four TOW missiles were fired, twenty-two hit their targets,
thirteen were launch excursions (bad missiles), and nine were misses. Four
hundred sixty two Iraqi automatic weapons and RPOs were seized and destroyed.
D. PHASE IV: 1 Mar - 16 Mar 1991 Static Defense of Kuwait City
I Mar - TOW Company moved with the battalion into Kuwaiti army barracks in
Barracks in Al Jahra. From there the battalion moved into position south of
Phase Line Bear (the Al Jahra motorway). First platoon returned from First
Battalion, Sixth Marines. Second Section, Second Platoon returned from Second
Battalion, Second Marines. Third Section, Second Platoon returned from
CSSD-26. The TOW Company Marines attached to CSSD-26 were recognized for
capturing an Iraqi Major General. This EPW Major General was the senior Iraqi
officer captured by 2d MarDiv units and was the Commanding General of the
Iraqi 14th Mechanized Infantry Division.
6 Mar - TOW Company moved with the battalion to new defensive positions south
of Kuwait City and west of Kuwait International Airport.
11 Mar - TOW Company Commander coordinated two U.S. Army H-60 helicopters for
flights by battalion Marines. These Marines were given a battlefield tour and
an overhead view of the defenses in and around Kuwait City. 330 Battalion
e lifted by the U.S. Army's 2d Aviation Brigade, out of the TOW
Company helo pad.
13'Mar - TOW Company hosted the American Ambassador to Kuwait, Ambassador
Edward Onehm. A static weapon display consisting of an M-60 tank, an M-60
blade tank that led the way through the Umm Gudair minefield, a AVLB with
combat-towed bridge, two TOW missile launchers and two Iraqi captured guns,
was put together for the visit. Ambassador Gnehm thanked the assembled
.Reserve Marines for their dedication and superlative efforts in the fight to
free Kuwait.
14 - 15 Mar - The following TOW Company, 8th Tank Battalion Marines have been
recommended for awards as a result of their actions in combat against Iraqi
forces in the Emirate of Kuwait:
