                C. Pre-mobilization - 17 Nov - 21 Dee 1990
Early in November, 1990 it became apparent that the Battalion would be
recalled to active duty. Phone communications with 4th MarDiv HU in New
Orleans (office of the Division Surgeon) confirmed that two Navy medical
department members of the Battalion would also be recalled
On 17 November 1990, the Marines of the Battalion recei;ed activation
orders. On the 29th of November, the attached Naval medical department
personnel received official notice. As a result, these personnel were
unable to report to Camp Lejuene with the Battalion which caused
interference with the ability of the Battalion to rapidly prepare to
deploy to SWA. Additionally, hospital corpsmen who had trained with
various gun companies (A,C,D,TOW) were not issued activation orders. As a
result, only H&S and B company corpsmen of the Battalion were activated,
leaving gaps in the number of trained personnel necessary to fulfill our
                     combat mission.
Having been notified of the high probability of activation, the
companies of the Battalion made attempts to ensure up to date
.vaccinations, medical records, and physical exams of Marines and Sailors
of the unit. A shortage of available vaccines, medical assistance, and
inconsistent guidance regarding the necessary vaccines for deployment
prevented this goal from being reached prior to activation.
                D. Mobilization - Camp Le-ieune, N.C.
nel began reporting at Camp Lejeune on 3 December 1990,
and by the 4th, the medical department consisted of the following
                     14 recalled Naval reservists;
Griffin, Larry P CDR, MC, USNR 12105 Alpha Co.

In addition, three members of a 4th FSGB unit were activated in sup p of
                     the battalion and reported on 4 December 1990. These were; 5 U.S.C. 552 (b)(6)

The period from the 4th to the lith of December was Occupied with
gathering information regarding required vaccinations, blood tests,
for Marines to be deployed, and information on medical
problems to be faced in SWA. Additionally, personnel deficiencies were
noted, equipment required was requested, and medical supplies needed for
deployment were gathered. Medical support from Camp Lejeune facilities
was limited so the BN BPS established its own inoculation clinic. From
arrival until departure on the 21st of December, the BAS was co-located
with that of 2nd Tanks in its medical spaces. In addition to medical care
duties, members of the department participated in specialized SWA training
with Marines in preparation for deployment.
A number of Marines, as deployment neared, reported chronic medical,
