PL~NNIN6 CONSIDER~TIONS

The characteristics of the ~rabian desert not only affect the

choice for dust control technique but also affect where and when

we employ it While planning dust control support we must

consider tactical impacts~ troop heal th and morale. For example,

the m~i~~le blast from a tank main gun will produce dust clouds

which can both mark the firing position and obscure sights. The

traditional method of preventing this has been tank crew em~laced

lime/cement stabili~ation. ~s mentioned above this method is

not effective in a low h~~midity environment. Similarly, the

movement of any vehicle will be clandestine only if dust

signature is controlled along the route of march With heavy

concentrations of soldiers in an arid area, sanitary waste tends

to dry and contaminate dust. thus dust becomes a potent~al

vector for bacterial and viral disease. On a basic morale level

we must consider the effects of having soldiers live continuously

in a dust filled environment. Obviously we need to provide some

dust free area where soldiers can get some respite. Part of our

role as engineer advisors to mane~ver commanders is to include

these dust control considerations in the planning process

RECOMMEND~T IONS

Based on the preceding evaluation of techniques and a realistic

look at operational requirements some general recommendations

emerge

* Bituminous treatments in an admixture appliration are

effective. Insure the depth o~ admixture layer is greater than

potential ruts (minimum 4 in).
