              APPENDIX 3 (Waste Disposal) to ANNEX L     (Field Sanitation)    to
              507th Med Co,(AA) FSOP

              i. PURPOSE: To   direct procedures   +or waste  disposal.

              2. PROCEDURES:


                 a. General-   The three types of waste are    human and
                    animal,   liquid (kitchen and bath), and    rtabbi sh.  T.@e'
                    disposal  method  selected will depend upon the locati:on
                    of..the unit and-the military situation.

                 b. On the March     Cat holes will be dug by each soldier as

                 c. Bivouac (I to   3 days): The field sanitation team will
                            7
                    supervise the   construction of straddle trench latrines.
                    They will be I +oot wide, 4 feet long, and 2.5 feet
                    deep.

                 d. Bivouac (mor e than  3 gayll: The field sanitation team
                    will sup;rvise7the   construction a+ deep pit-latrines.
                    The pits will be 2   feet wide, and 3.5 feet long.      The
                    pit will be I +oot   deep +or each week the unit
                    anticipates staying (maximum depth. 4 feet).

                 e. Burn-out Latrine: Burn-out latrines will be
                    -- ----- -------
                    constructed when soil is too rocky or the water table
                    too high +or pits.

                 f. Closing Latninest When latrines are filled to within         I
                    ;oot of the surface or they are to be abandoned, the
                    field sanitation team will:
                         (1)  spray the walls, contents, and grOLtnd'2 feet
                              around with approved pesticides
                         (2)  +ill the pit to ground level in I -Foot layers
                              (spray each layer with pesticide)
                         (7>) pile dir@@ 1 -Foot above ground level and spray
                              it with pesticide
                         (4)  pos.@t a sign that reads "LATRINE CLOSED ON
                              (date)"

                 h. Liquids: Liquid wastes will.be disposed of in soakage
                    pits where they were produced.      Soakage pits used -For
                    liquid kitchen waste will have grease traps. Enough
                    pi-Ls will be constructed so that they can be used on
                    alternate days to allow the liquids to soatc in.

                 g. Rubbish: Rubbish will normally be buried. It         will  not
                         --7
                    be buried within 100 feet of a water source that is
                    used for cooking or drinking It will be incinerated
                    only when authorized by the commander (+or OPSEC
                    reasons).
