One other experience happened while we waited in our
perimeter for the ground war to start. It was mid after-
noon. The air war had been underway for a number of days
already. We were all busy improving our fighting positions.
I don't remember who saw them first, but someone said to
look up. The sky was pure blue with just a few high clouds.
You could almost always see forever in the desert. Flying
very high was a formation of four B-52S. Each bomber had
an escort of no less than eight F-15s. There were some 40
planes in all. on the ground we were all cheering. It was
really impressive. I remember the feeling of confidence I
got just by watching those planes flying uncontested into
the fourth largest army's airspace.
There were numerous instances like that throughout my
stay in the gulf. Every time a formation of Apaches flew
by or a pair of A-los banked near us with their distinctive
sound I drew confidence and pride from it.
