      SEPTEMBER nO, 1990 - 5TH MASH first hospital to establish in the             baharan
                      area. We were given a "sictcall" mission to include psychia-
                                                                        handle -si'alcall
                      try,..MASH.'s-are not equipped or staffed t-0
                      Equipment  is based around emergency resusc'ltatfv6 surgical
                      support. Phys
                                      3.cians were surgeons, OB-SYN, one emergency
                      medical@,physician and one general medical officer. The nurses
                      were 66H and 66E and 66F. The majority of the nurses were OR
                      SSI due to the original intent of the HASH. We did have one
                      66D and one 666. 32nd PIEDSOM had limited supplies available.
                      Many medications and some equipment was destroyed in transit
                      due to heat. Staff worked 12 hour shifts, 6 days per week.
                      Over the next 2 1/2 months: outpatients - 10,062, surgL=ries'-
                      149, admissions 861, 4 medical evacuations to Europe that
                      required ANC, 66H6A escorts ( 2 MI's, Head Injury, Bowel Ob-
                      strt.tction). No psychiatrist or psych technician on staff.
                      Tent established for minimal care psych patients while
                      moderate to severe psych cases were admitted to the wards.
                      Air Force ATH and 66th F@VAQprovided part-time psychiatrist
                      and technician. The remainder of the time had to be covered
                      by MASH personnel.
   (U) OCTOBER     1990-- Continuous training and individual PT. Equipment con7
                      tinues to arrive by sea. Details sent to retrieve it.
   (U) OCTOBER 15, i990 - Medical Management of Chemical Casual'ty C'o'Ur'se begins.
                      3 ANC's assigned to attend each cycle. Green leafy vegetables
                      thought to be the source of the massive influx of BE problems.
                      Local nationals use human waste to fertilize gardens.
   (U) OCTOBER 27, 1990 - New PLV Ventilators begin to arrive. Respiratory
                      therapy department plans cltsses after medical maintenance
                      examines equipment. 01@ MAI ventilators did not survive heat
                      during shipping. The wiring on the majority of them melted
                      together during shipping and could not be adequately repaired.
   (U) NOVEMBER  6,  1990 - DEPMEDS water distribution system arrives and we await
                      instruction from Ft Sam Houston. L:ow-capacity portable x-ray
                      put on order.
   (U) NOVEMBER  16,  i990 - Preparation begins for President Bush's        visit.   5TH.   MASH
                      designated as VIP hospil.il"in the Dahiran irea. VIP ward
                      er.tablished.by CPT Kara Murray HN and SSG Joyce Stuart        WM.
                      Security arranged by Troop Commander, S-2/3 and XO.
                      - Received FRAS order to relocate.
                      - Psych team (OM) arrives in Saudi and co-locateei with        the
                      28th CSH. Psych patients gradually transferred.
   (U) NOVEMBER  20-30, 1990      28TH CSH stands down to field                  MASH work-
                      load increases   although by this time the 83th EVAC is'semi-
                      operational.'

      DECEMBER 7, 1990 - 28TH CSH      operational later than e>:pected,' MASH      prepares
