                                          INF--ORMATION PAPER (CON-I-)

                  1. Only food packed in cans, glass bottles, or air tight foii (.,o.REs)
should be consui-scd after OX-DOSure to chemical attack. No atte,-,:pt should
be -.ade to cat while in an ,ABC environment.

                  n. Reliance will have to be made upon the determination of contamination
or lack thereof, on the outer packaging material due to the absence of
any specific nethod to detect chemical agents in food.

                  n. Initial decontamination efforts on food items will be limited '6o
removal ol' the containers and carton overwrao material.

                  o. Siiri,)Iist decon't.-amina@6-ion procedure is to allow the materials to
ago and "air" weather ventilation). Any further decontamination procedures
              are very labor intensive.
                  p. Seif decontamination will occur over tire with most agents except
thickened Custards and other thickened agents. Decontamination can be
enhanced by use of heat to va.oorize the che.-.iical agent or by physical removal
              w-I'L-@i soap and water.

                  q. Except for hoa@6 resistant toxins and so;,,c spores, the use of heat
is the :i:ost practical :ne'@hod o' c!econta!ninating food from biological con-
              ta:rjina@@ion.

                  r. tian(ile all exposed food packaging material as co.,ita,@iiinated wastes
              after an NBf.' attack.

                  s. After a nuclear attack, if it is safe to be in the area, then the
salvaged @ood is safe, although it may be slightly conta6ciinatecl. Decon
procedures include rc:noving all dust Iroii exoosed surfaces or aging.

                  t. The AN/PDR-27 rediac set is used to r,:onitor persorncl, food, water
              and material "or nuclear radiation.

                  u. Wholo-body ga.-.oT-.a irradiation hazard 46,o an individual far outweighs
any potential hazard fro:.i food contaminated fro:.. alpha or bc@ue particles.
