                                           HISTORICAL BRIEF

The battalion was first constituted in the Regular Army as the

51st Engineer Battalion (Separate) in October 1933. The unit was

redesignated as the 92nd Engineer Battalion (Separate) on I January

1938 and was activated at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri on I May

1942. While training for duty overseas, the unit was reorganized

and redesignated a second time as the 92nd Engineer Regiment

(General Service) on 22 May 1942. On 1 August that same year, the

unit was again redesignated and became the 92nd Engineer General

              Service Regiment.

The 92nd Engineer General Service Regiment served with

distinction during World War II. In Italy, the unit earned four

campaign streamers: Naples Foggia, Rome-Arno, the North Apennines,

and the Po Valley. Due to the reduction in military strength

following World War II, the battalion was inactivated in Italy on

20 April 1946. On 25 February 1954, while still in an inactive

status, the unit was redesignated the 92nd Engineer Battalion. The

battalion consisted of a Headquarters and Headquarters Company and

three Service Companies: Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie. After the

redesignation and restructuring, leftover remnants of the old

General Service Regiment were disbanded. On 9 February 1955, at

Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 92nd was once again activated and

renamed the 92nd Engineer Battalion (Construction). It was

attached to the 20th Engineer Brigade, XVIIIth Airborne Corps. In

1955, a Company Task Force was deployed to South Carolina for a

three month beach restoration project following damage inflicted by

e. Following the deactivation of the

20th Engineer Brigade on 16 December 1958, the battalion was
