18th Quartermaster (DSU)
101st Air Assault Division-2120th S and S,426th S and T (DSUS)
82nd Airborne Division-407th S and T (DSU)
16th Military Police BDE-Enemy Prisoner of War camps at Rafha
and LBC
The following field bakery received veterinary inspection
support:
2120th S and S Field Bakery
These sites were inspected on a cyclic basis, except the
406th, which was inspected almost daily. Lack of adequate
numbers of working refrigeration vans again limited the DSUs'
ability to store A rations and supplements. At some sites, fresh
fruits and eggs were stored on the ground without protection
other than their own containers. This required monitoring by
veterinary personnel and, when necessary, condemnation due to
loss of quality.
Because operational rations were no longer being inspected at
King Aziz port (they were now arriving in country in milvans and
being forwarded without inspections) most lots received a receipt
inspection at the 406th. As units moved north for the ground
war, MREs were forwarded to log bases in Iraq. Some of these
were forwarded from contingency stocks, whose inspection was not
permitted at the 406th. It was anticipated that these would be
inspected by the 248th Medical Detachment (JA), who went forward
to Log Base Romeo at G+I.
No major problems affecting the wholesomeness of operational
rations, supplements, or MORES other than handling damage were
discovered at 18th Airborne Class I sites.
A Class A ration steak dinner was served to all units of the
18th Airborne Corps just prior to the onset of the ground war.
This issue stressed the distribution system, mainly due to the
son with
preventive medicine officers and surveillance at DSUs helped
ensure the proper storage and timely distribution of theis ineal.
After combat ceased, MRE turn-in became the 73d's main
concern. The few unused pallets of MREs returning from Iraq were
inspected for damage. Damaged pallets and those lots 3 years or
older received a surveillance inspection before being shipped in
Tnilvans to the rear. These inspections were ongoing at the time
of this writing with no problems identified to date other than
fork lift damage.
Three Military Working Dogs owned by the 16 MP BDE were
provided veterinary support by the 73d. These guard/explosives
dogs were used minimally. Each dog was given a physical exam and
had blood, serum, and urine samples submitted to an area
evacuation hospital for evaluation. No abnormal values were
noted.
