Assessment. S
Plan for the Biologit Surveillance Initiative, Kuwait Oil Fires Health RI k
Soldiers preparing to deploy to Kuwait will be asked to
complete a simple health questionnaire. Some soldiers will be
selected at-random +Lo participate in a breathing test (a device will
measure how forcefully an individual can exhale), and will be asked
to donate a blood specimen (equal to about 5 tablespoons). These
tests pose no risk to participants except for any problem arising
from a routine blood draw (a needlestick in the arm)--which would
be an extremely rare occurrence.
It you are chosen for special testing to represent your unit be
aware that your cooperation with this surveillance is important for
the preventive health of the entire unit. The tests are designed to
detect very subtle responses that the body has when toxic substances
are present--well before. any disease would occur. Therefore persons
not taking part ii the special tests are @ missing a n opportunity to
be screened for disease. Instead, the Tesults of your tests will serve
as an early marker for the whole grou@ that is located at the same
distance from the fires as you.
By signing below you are acknowledging *that this surveillance
-lips been explained to you, and that you are willing to take part in the
-needed measurements. Thank you for your cooperation.
